Frequently Asked Question(s)

Why are you called Mauve?
*sigh* Because when we were in school being schoolboys some of the other people were weird and they thought it was a good idea. Well, that's not quite true, the reason I am called Mauve is because this is the internet and everyone has to be called something. And things like Dan go quickly. Some (tbh fairly sad) people use their Cambridge CRSID on the web, even after they've left Cambridge. Now, my CRSID is tolerably memorable (dp247. like Dan Pope, open 24/7, yeah?) but it turns out I'm not a lame-ass geek. Oh, and if you want the real reason, it's because mauve happened to be the colour of a maths textbook.

Can you fix my computer?
No. Unless you're a fit girl, in which case of course I can, and what are you doing next Tuesday?

What are your hobbies?
I'm massively enthusiastic about computer games. Then there's programming, surfing the internet... but you don't want to know about all that. Outside of computers, I'm a keen sailor except I haven't sailed in a while because I've been at university. I play real tennis, and I cycle every now and then. I swim lots: we have a swimming pool at home, but it's only usable during the summer. I've recently taken up skiing (I went on holiday to Val D'Isère). In the not-quite-so-active category, I like cinema (not the arty crap that Jack likes) and certain television series (Angel, Futurama, Buffy, Father Ted). Also anime, although I actually buy my anime on DVD, unlike most people in this country who download fansubs from the internet. This means that I'm rather limited by publishers in what I can watch.

Why don't you have broadband?
Because there isn't DSL nor cable provision for my region, which proves to be the bane of my existence. Alas, I'm on a NATted modem on BTOpenworld, and the minimum ping to any kind of games server is ~400ms.

What can you program in?
I can program in C/C++ under Win32 and Linux, Java, PHP, Perl, Python, Bash, Javascript, Prolog, ML(retch), ARM asm. I also know some other things that aren't programming, like HTML and Visual Basic.

What programming projects do you have on the go at the moment?
My main thrust at the moment is on my game demo which I will send off to companies to exhibit my talent. That is a naval RTS game in OpenGL, although it's far from complete. Qeez is also kind of active. Smaller projects come and go quite rapidly. Other large projects are on the back burner, at the moment, unfortunately. I would quite like to work on Plum when I get a chance, because I am aware of several bugs. Unfortunately, fixing those bugs requires more than just tweaking because most of the codebase has been changed since I wrote the version which is operational on a couple of my channels.

What computer do you have?
Ha. Like I'd have only one computer.
